Day 1: An Active Adventure on the Lower Danube

We will depart from Szeged in the early morning of 1 May 2027 (Saturday). After crossing the border at Nagylak, we will travel south along Main Road 6 towards the Lower Danube. During the morning, we will arrive at the Danube, which forms the border between Serbia and Romania in this area. We will stop for photographs at one of the world’s largest rock sculptures: the imagined portrait of Decebalus, the Dacian king, carved into a steep rock face overlooking the river. At Dubova, we will board a speedboat and cruise through the Great Kazan Gorge, a spectacular 4-kilometre stretch of the Danube. We will see the entrance to Ponicova Cave and the Széchenyi Memorial Plaque. If the water level permits, we will also disembark at the Veterani Cave Fortress and explore the cave from the inside while recalling the battles fought there against the Ottoman forces. After our speedboat trip, we will board the coach and set off on a moderate hike to the top of the gorge above the Great Kazan Gorge, where breathtaking panoramic views await us. We will then continue by coach to Băile Herculane, a historic spa town nestled in the valley of the Cerna River, whose origins date back to Roman times. During the Austro-Hungarian Belle Époque, it was a favourite resort of the aristocracy and was often mentioned alongside Opatija and Karlovy Vary as one of Europe’s renowned spa destinations. During our sightseeing walk, we will visit the statue of Hercules, the Casino building, Villa Sissi, the Szapáry Baths and the thermal springs. There will also be an opportunity to relax beneath the shady trees in the park along the Cerna River. We will set off for home in the late afternoon, with arrival in Szeged expected late in the evening.
