Day 1: Vienna
On December 5, 2026 (Saturday), we depart from Szeged in the early morning from the car park at Szeged Plaza, ready to spend a truly special Advent day in Vienna, Austria’s magnificent capital. This time, we follow in the footsteps of Empress Elisabeth, better known as Sissi, while discovering the most beautiful and famous sights of imperial Vienna. In the morning, we visit Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Austrian emperors and one of Austria’s most iconic landmarks, as well as a magnificent masterpiece of Baroque architecture. We explore the splendid imperial apartments and elegant state rooms before taking a stroll through the beautifully landscaped French-style gardens behind the palace. We then travel by coach towards the historic city centre, where a guided walking tour introduces us to the most important reminders of Vienna’s imperial past. Along the way, we admire the magnificent Vienna State Opera and visit the Imperial Crypt, the final resting place of the Habsburg dynasty. Among those laid to rest here are Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph and his beloved wife, Sissi. During our walk, we also admire the monumental St. Stephen’s Cathedral, better known as the Stephansdom, and the Hofburg, the impressive palace complex that once served as the imperial residence. The afternoon is devoted entirely to the magic of Advent. We have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the lively atmosphere of Vienna’s famous Christmas markets, where festive lights, Christmas melodies, the aroma of mulled wine and charming wooden stalls evoke the most wonderful time of the year. The romantic streets of the illuminated city centre and its festive decorations provide a fitting finale to our Viennese adventure. In the evening, we say goodbye to Vienna, beautifully adorned with Advent lights, and begin our journey home. We expect to arrive in Szeged in the late evening.
