Day 1: Osijek and Vukovar
On December 13, 2026 (Sunday), we depart from Szeged in the morning from the car park at Szeged Plaza. After crossing the border at Udvar, we arrive in Vukovar, situated on the banks of the Danube. The town became known worldwide because of a tragic historical event. During the Yugoslav Wars, in the autumn of 1991, the Yugoslav People’s Army launched a devastating attack on Vukovar, leaving much of the town in ruins. Rebuilt almost from scratch, Vukovar has since become one of Croatia’s most important national symbols. We visit the Memorial Cemetery of the Homeland War Victims, the site of the executions at Ovčara, and the water tower, which has become a symbol of freedom and resilience. We then travel to Osijek, situated on the banks of the Drava River. The city’s most significant attraction is its charming historic fortress district, which we explore on foot. The jewel of the main square is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, one of the largest churches in Croatia. Free time at the Advent market. We depart for home in the late afternoon, with arrival in Szeged expected in the evening.
