Day 1: Palić, Subotica and Senta
On December 6, 2026 (Sunday), we depart from Szeged in the morning from the car park at Szeged Plaza. Shortly after crossing the border, we arrive in Palić, where we explore the elegant Art Nouveau buildings dating from the turn of the 20th century along the lakeshore, including the Grand Terrace, the Women’s Bath and Owl Tower. We then continue to Subotica, a city of around 100,000 inhabitants, where we visit the City Hall, one of the finest masterpieces of Hungarian Art Nouveau architecture. During our sightseeing tour, we also admire Raichle Palace, the former private residence of the Art Nouveau architect Ferenc Raichle. The National Theatre on the main square was once a major centre of Hungarian theatrical life and remains an important cultural venue today. Subotica is also home to one of the world’s largest synagogues, designed by the architects Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab, who also designed the City Hall. The city’s famous son is Dezső Kosztolányi, one of the great figures of Hungarian literature. We visit both of his public statues during our tour. After some free time in the city centre, we travel to Senta, situated on the banks of the Tisza River, where we visit the Réel Chocolate Museum. Here, we have the opportunity to sample high-quality, locally made chocolates. Following our free time in Senta, we begin our journey home, with arrival in Szeged expected in the evening.
