Day 1: Kopački Rit Nature Park and the Papuk Mountains
On April 24, 2027 (Saturday), we depart from Szeged in the early morning. During the morning, we arrive at Kopački Rit Nature Park in northeastern Croatia, a protected natural area covering 23,000 hectares at the confluence of the Danube and Drava rivers. After visiting the visitor centre, we board a boat for an opportunity to discover the rich flora and fauna of one of Europe’s best-preserved floodplain wetlands. We then return to our coach, cross the Drava River and leave the Baranja Triangle behind as we enter the region of Slavonia. The Papuk Mountains lie in the western part of this historic region. Reaching elevations of almost 1,000 metres, Papuk stretches from east to west and is distinguished by its unique microclimate and remarkable geological features. The area enjoys dual protection: it is designated as a Nature Park for its natural value and is also a member of UNESCO’s European Geoparks Network, thanks to the richness and diversity of its geological heritage. We visit the modern, two-storey Geo Info Centre, opened in 2021, which houses a surprisingly impressive range of fascinating exhibitions and interactive displays. On the ground floor, we explore an exhibition presenting the geological history of the Papuk Mountains and discover why Papuk is considered the most geologically diverse region in Croatia. Afterwards, we enjoy an easy circular hike of approximately 2.5 kilometres through the Papuk Mountains, taking in the area’s beautiful natural scenery. We depart for home in the late afternoon, with arrival in Szeged expected in the evening.
