Day 1: Salonta and Oradea
On December 12, 2026 (Saturday), we depart from Szeged early in the morning from the car park at Szeged Plaza. In the late morning, we arrive in Salonta, the birthplace of the famous Hungarian poet János Arany. We visit the exhibition housed in the Csonkatorony (Truncated Tower), which presents the poet’s life and work. We then continue to Oradea, the centre of the Partium region, rightly known as the Gateway to Transylvania. Before the Treaty of Trianon, the city was one of Hungary’s most important cultural and literary centres. Endre Ady and Gyula Juhász both lived and worked here. Ady met Léda in Oradea, while Juhász Juhász met Anna Sárvári here. We begin our exploration of the city at its oldest landmark, Oradea Fortress, before continuing to the charming Baroque Quarter. After visiting the cathedral, we see the reliquary bust of Saint Ladislaus, preserved in the beautifully restored Bishop’s Palace. The city centre, divided by the Crișul Repede River, evokes the elegance of the Belle Époque, with the Art Nouveau Black Eagle Palace, the Neoclassical Theatre and EMKE, Ady’s favourite café. During our sightseeing tour, we also visit the Darvas–La Roche House, one of Oradea’s most valuable Art Nouveau architectural masterpieces. Following its meticulous restoration, the building now houses the Art Nouveau Museum, one of the city’s most distinctive attractions. Free time at the Advent Christmas market in the main square. We depart for home in the late afternoon, with arrival in Szeged expected in the evening.
