Day 1: Padiș Plateau
On April 10, 2027 (Saturday), we depart from Szeged in the morning from the car park at Szeged Plaza. During the morning, we arrive at the Padiș Plateau, where our hike begins. We start our hike among the round ponds of the Little Padiș Meadow, then climb along an old cart track towards Boga Castle. Our destination is not an actual castle, but a spectacular rocky ridge. Its rugged peaks and steep slopes reminded people in the past of castle walls and fortifications, which is how the ridge acquired the name Boga Castle. Standing atop these natural “bastions”, we are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views. Below us lies the enchanting valley of the Boga Stream, while beyond it stretches the Beiuș Basin. We explore the various viewpoints before crossing the Varasó Meadow. Soon, we reach Padiș Cave, which consists of a single large chamber. We then cross a low mountain saddle and shortly afterwards return to our coach, parked on Padiș Meadow. We set off for home in the late afternoon, with arrival in Szeged expected in the evening. The Padiș Plateau is the highest region of the Apuseni Mountains, located in the northern part of the Bihor Mountains. Situated at an altitude of 1,225 metres, Padiș is a plateau covering just 36 square kilometres, yet it contains an extraordinary concentration of natural wonders, perhaps unmatched anywhere else in the world. Here, we can discover all the characteristic features of a karst landscape, shaped over time by mountain streams and underground rivers as they carved their way through the limestone. The Padiș Plateau and the Apuseni Mountains are also exceptionally rich in wildlife and plant life. The area is home to several plant species that occur in only one or two other locations worldwide.
