Day 1: Zádiel Valley
On April 3, 2027 (Saturday), we depart from Szeged in the early morning from the car park at Szeged Plaza. During the morning, we arrive in the village of Zádiel, located just a few kilometres from the Hungarian–Slovak border. This is where the spectacular gorge valley, named after the village, begins, inviting visitors to explore its remarkable natural beauty. Nature lovers can look forward to a wild and romantic canyon, fascinating rock formations, flower-filled meadows and picturesque panoramic views in the Zádiel Valley. It is the oldest nature reserve in the Slovak Karst and one of the jewels of the Gemer–Turňa Karst region. The gorge was formed through the erosive activity of the Blatnica Stream, which collects water from streams originating in the Slovak Ore Mountains. Over millions of years, the water carved its way through the limestone bedrock along geological fault lines. Its erosive action created caves, which gradually widened and eventually collapsed, giving rise to the valley we see today. This slow geological process, lasting millions of years, continues to shape the landscape. The gorge reaches depths of up to 300 metres, while in some places it is barely 10 metres wide. The circular hiking route is approximately 12 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. Much of the trail passes beneath the shade of trees, making for a pleasant nature walk. Halfway along the route, there is an opportunity to take a break and enjoy our packed sandwiches. We set off for home in the late afternoon, with arrival in Szeged expected in the evening.
