Day 1: Devín and Bratislava
On December 19, 2026 (Saturday), we depart from Szeged in the early morning from the car park at Szeged Plaza. During the morning, we arrive at Devín Castle, one of Central Europe’s most remarkable fortresses. Its historical significance and breathtaking location make it truly unique. Perched on a rocky cliff at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers, the castle has dominated the surrounding landscape for centuries. It was once known as the “Gateway to the Carpathians”, as anyone watching from here could monitor both river and land routes. After exploring the castle and admiring the picturesque panoramic views, we continue to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. For centuries, Bratislava was one of the most important centres of Hungarian history and culture, and the city still preserves numerous sites connected to Hungary’s past. We visit Bratislava Castle, which served for a long time as one of the most important fortresses of the Kingdom of Hungary. The Hungarian Crown Jewels were kept within its walls, and several Hungarian Diets were held in its ceremonial halls. We also visit the Coronation Church, St Martin’s Cathedral, where Hungarian kings and queens, including Maria Theresa, were crowned between 1563 and 1830. Today, the cathedral’s tower is still adorned with a huge gilded replica of the Hungarian Holy Crown. Near the Primate’s Palace, we see the historic building where the Hungarian Diet convened during the Ottoman occupation, when Buda was no longer considered safe. After our walk through the historic city centre, we enjoy free time at Bratislava’s charming Advent market. We depart for home in the late afternoon, with arrival in Szeged expected late in the evening.
